Whirlwinds and Typhoons ...

“Let Go and Let God” is a good motto or tag line for anyone. It’s an easy and quick reminder of what we should do when we begin to be overwhelmed by life. Since you can’t control it, you might as well relax and let God handle it.

Just let it go and let God have his way are lyrics found in a beautiful song by Yolander Adams. On the right day and in the right situation, that simple phrase could be as powerful as an entire sermon. It’s powerful because we know that it is what we ought to do, rather, what God commanded us to do in various ways throughout the scripture.

For example:

Be anxious for nothing but in all things by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God and the peace of God which passes all understanding will guard your heart and mind in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:6-7)

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your path. (Proverbs 3:4-5)

The entire Bible is divine literature of centuries of men and women who let go of their thoughts, wants, desires, and ways, and submitted to the will and way of God. From Abraham, Moses, David, and Esther, all the way through to Jesus Christ and His apostles, who are shining examples of how we ought to release our cares to our good and loving God.

Letting go and letting God means that we trust the omniscience of God, that is: He knows what He is doing. Above all, letting go demonstrates that you trust the Love God has for us, which is not stingy, finite, or conditional. It’s the agape love that found us while we thought we didn’t need Him and gave us true life through His son, Jesus.

Sometimes it takes months and years of fighting, waning, and worrying before we let go. If you’re honest with yourself, as I finally was, there is a position in your heart and head that knows when the phrase pays only lip service to your anxious thoughts. As opposed to when you’ve finally run the course of self-effort and have chosen to truly 'let go and let God'.

Letting go creates a state of peace where you’ve officially become unbothered, though nothing has changed. That’s true peace in the storm, a true Elsa moment of “Let the storm rage on”! Not only are we happy and content in the storm, but our souls begin to thrive in it. We get comfortable with the chaos around us, because it can no longer get in us.

Letting go is freedom. It is the freedom God has been trying to convince you exists if you would just “Be Still”. He always knew you didn’t have the capacity or resources on your own and has always encouraged you to team up with Him to get to the finish line.

I must admit that the things that sometimes have us in this whirlwind are the things we believe are simple enough that we can handle. If we picked up a hot cooking pan, we would quickly put it down, because we cannot hold on to it with our bare hands. That’s the difference between our physical limitations that instinctively tell us to let go or reach out for help and those that are psychological or spiritual. For the latter, our instinct to let go kicks in much later unless we develop the muscle of letting God handle all things concerning us.

So here I am, months after being thrown into my own typhoon, and finally letting go. However, I must admit that this process of letting go isn’t linear, and at various stages, I would have let go of small battles, while naively thinking I could handle the war. God tells us that we will continue to exhaust and frustrate ourselves when we try to do what only He can. As we seek His guidance through prayer and study of His word, we must let Him take over.

You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the Lord will give you, Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the Lord will be with you.’” 2 Chronicles 20:17

The ‘war’ rages on while I sit back in my princess mode and let God handle it as He promised.

Luv Ya!
